Abstract
Background: Pregnant women infected with hepatitis B (HBV) pose a risk for infecting their newborns by vertical transmission. Especially infants of mothers with positive HBeAg are at risk for peripartal
transmission of hepatitis B infection.Case Report: A HBsAg carrier pregnant woman was determined in 1997 and after her first baby (in 1997) and the second ( in 1999) were immunized for HBV postpartum within 6 hours; also her family members were searched for HBV. At the 6th and 12th months’ controls the anti HBs positivity of both of carrier pregnant women’s babies had protective anti HBs levels and their antiHBs positivity is still continue to be highly protective level (840 IU /L and 1000 IU/L, respectively). From totally 35 family members, 16 (48.8 %) were HBsAg positive, three (8.6 %) were anti-HBcIgG and anti-HBs positive, and seven ( 20 %) were HBV negative. Conclusions: These results suggest that all pregnant women should be tested for HBsAg during pregnancy and the newborns of HBV carrier mothers should be immunized immediately against HBV infection. Also carriers’ family members should be tested for HBV and immunized.
