Abstract
Significant improvement of the results of liver transplantations is due not only to better surgical techniques, but also to a considerable progress in the field of immunosuppressive treatment. The currently used preparations present a wide spectrum of possibilities for suppression of the liver graft recipient's immune system. They also make it possible to apply the optimum immunosuppression protocol after OLT. The paper is not only a review of immunosuppressive treatment methods used after OLT all over the world, but it is also focused on the discussion of practical, pharmacological aspects of such treatment, taking into consideration the characteristics of individual preparations and, which is very important, their side effects and mutual interactions. In our opinion, effective suppression of the recipient's immune system used to prevent acute rejection processes, taking into account not only the immunosuppressive potential of the drug but also its, usually narrow therapeutic 'window' resulting in its toxicity and side effects, as well as subsequent intensive immunosuppressive treatment, are the prerequisites for safe management of patients after liver transplantations. Therefore, discussion of the most important aspects of post-OLT immunosuppressive treatment becomes extremely important in view of current advances in Polish liver transplantology.
