Background: Aspiration of a foreign body is usually accompanied with acute cough, wheezing and respiratory distress.
Case Report: We present here a case of a retained foreign body after aspiration in a 15-year-old adolescent which was complicated by empyema of the right lung one year after aspiration. This is a rare but severe complication of a retained foreign body in the lung, especially after such a long time.
Conclusions: In patients with persistent coughing and asthma-like symptoms without acute respiratory distress symptoms but with a history of a foreign body in the throat, radiological examination and an elective bronchoscopy ought to be performed.
