Figure 4. Forearm skin microvascular post-occlusive reactive hyperemia (PORH) assessed by laser Doppler flowmetry (LDF) in case (A) and healthy control (B). Microvascular blood flow is expressed in arbitrary perfusion units (PU), and final blood flow values for baseline (B), occlusion (O), and reperfusion (R) were obtained by calculating the area under the curve for blood flow values averaged over a specific time period (1 min) (AUC B, AUC O, AUC R). Final PORH is expressed as the difference between percentage of flow change between reperfusion [R% = (AUC R/AUC B)×100] and occlusion [O%=(AUC O/AUC B)×100] in relation to baseline (R–O%). R-O% in case patient was 65% (A), and in healthy control was 235% (B), indicating 3.6 times better skin microvascular reactivity in response to vascular occlusion in the healthy control compared to the case patient.
