A few RBCs have the crescent shape that is classically described as a “sickled cell.” About half of the RBCs are elongated but not crescents. About half of the RBCs are round, with the normal biconcave disc shape. This variation in RBC shape could represent ex vivo oxygenation, dehydration, or other conditions outside the body. A normal neutrophil is seen at the lower left corner. Normal platelets are present but out of focus in this image.
