Abstract

Background: Gastric polyps, being relatively rare and in the majority of cases asymptomatic, are important
due to the risk of their malignant transformation. In histological examination gastric polyps are usually identified as adenomas or hyperplastic polyps. The size of polyps seems to play an important role in malignant transformation. Multiple gastric polyps are diagnosed rarely.Case Report: A case of 47-year old woman with massive gastric polyposis, episodes of gastrointestinal bleeding, anemia, weakness and weight loss is presented. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy revealed multiple polyps of various size covering the entire gastric mucosa. After conservative preparation, which included total parenteral nutrition and blood transfusion, the patient underwentsurgical procedure. A giant stomach reaching down to a pelvis and pressing other adjacent organs was found intraoperatively. Histological examination of the operative material revealed papillar, villous and mixed forms of adenomas as well as hemangioteleangiectatic changes, without any sign of malignant transformation. Conclusions: The presented case is an example of severe, generalized and potentially life-threatening complications due to giant, multiple although histologically benign polypoid lesions in the stomach.
