Abstract
Background: Syringomatous adenoma (SA) of the nipple is a rare and distinct, benign clinical entity. It can evoke many clinico-pathological problems, especially concerning differentiation from nipple
duct adenoma or tubular carcinoma.Case Report: A 50-year-old woman presented with a painful mass beneath right nipple for over 10 years. Physical examination revealed a firm, discrete mass 4 x 3 cm in the right breast. Fine needle aspiration cytology showed few groups of benign ductal cells and stroma. An excisional biopsy was done. Microscopically, the tumor consisted of proliferating ductules, tubules or thin epithelial strands, lined by a luminal layer of epithelial cells and a peripheral myoepithelial cell layer without any atypia, haphazardly scattered throughout a desmoplastic stroma suggesting a histological diagnosis of SA of nipple. In view of involvement of the deep resected margin by the tumor subcutaneous mastectomy with wide excision of the margins was done. The patient remains well without any recurrence 2 years after operation. Conclusions: Only 24 cases of SA have been documented in the world literature, and to the best of our knowledge this is the first case to be reported from Indian subcontinent.
