Abstract

Background: Phytobezoars are frequently found in the stomach and are composed of indigestible vegetable fibers. They are usually associated with gastric hypomotility or prior gastric resections. Diospyrobezoars, a subset of phytobezoars, are related to excessive eating of persimmon. They have a wooden consistency, therefore enzymatic or endoscopic therapies usually fail. Case Report: Herein we report a patient with a huge gastric diospyrobezoar who underwent laparoscopic extirpation, subsequent to several unsuccessful attempts of endoscopic removal. Conclusions: Laparoscopy may be a good alternative in cases where conservative measures fail to remove a gastric bezoar.

Keywords: diospyrobezoar, Laparoscopy, phytobezoar, persimmon
