Abstract
Background: Ultrasonography is a valuable and non-invasive technique to monitor cervical muscle outlines. The purpose of this study was to compare the right and the left neck semispinalis capitis
muscles size in a case of idiopathic scoliosis.Material/Methods: The subject was a fifteen-year old high school female student. The cross-sectional area and the linear dimensions of the neck semispinalis capitis muscle were measured by a real-time ultrasonography apparatus. Results: The clinical diagnosis was idiopathic scoliosis with primary right thoracic and compensatory left lumbar curves. The cross-sectional area was 25.3% smaller on the right side than on the left side. The muscle was rounder on the left side than on the right side. The difference between the sides was outside the normal range as determined in our earlier study in healthy females (0-16 %).Conclusions: Ultrasonography may be a useful method to assess the difference between the right and the left neck muscle size in a case of idiopathic scoliosis.
