Abstract
Background: Minimally invasive surgery is coming to the forth in the management of many surgical problems due to the advantages it offers. However, its use for resection of retroperitoneal
tumors has not been widely reported.Case Report: We utilized laparoscopy successfully in resection of retroperitoneal tumors in two patients. The first patient was a 37 years old female with sensory radiculopathy down the left leg believed to be secondary to left sided infrarenal neurofibroma (9X10X12cm) that wasremoved by laparoscopy-assisted technique while the second patient was a 39 years old female with a 5 cm neurofibroma of the presacral area that was removed laparoscopically. Anextension of retroperitoneal tumors into the spinal canal was ruled out prior to surgery. The choice of patient’s position and trocar placement was dictated by size and location of the tumor. Conclusions: We found laparoscopy or laparoscopy-assisted techniques safe and feasible in resection of certain retroperitoneal tumors.
