Summary
Background: Ventricular arrhythmias have been reported in association with cardiac fibromas.
Case report: A cardiac fibroma was incidentally found in a neonate. Repeated echocardiograms demonstrated its continuous slow growth and some central calcifications. When he was 18-month-old, he
developed sustained ventricular tachycardia. Control echocardiogram a few weeks later demonstrated multiple central calcifications, suggesting a focal necrosis of the mass. This necrotic area may be responsible for micro-reentry. Surviving tissue traversing infarcted areas can also establish macro-reentry pathways. At 5-year follow-up, size and echogenicity of the mass did not change anymore.
Conclusion: This case report is interesting in so far as simultaneous echocardiographic changes suggest specific arrhythmic mechanisms.
