Abstract
Background: Psychical disturbances in a patient with an uncommon connective tissue disease – pseudoxanthoma elasticum are described. Little knowledge of the disease and risk of different, life-threatening complications encouraged us to present this case report.Case Report:Hallucinate–delusional syndrome related to vascular abnormalities was diagnosed in the patient. MRI of the brain revealed ischemic lesions in both hemispheres, including frontal lobes. Results of the examinations aimed to detect risk factors of brain ischemia (EEG, ultrasound of the heart, coagulation tests, detecting of thrombophilia, antinuclear antibodies) were within normal limits. Increased platelet activity, probably related to vascular wall damage in the course of PXE, was observed. Acetylsalicylic acid, ranitidine, and pernazine were administered resulting in improvement of psychiatric state of the patient. Conclusions: It is most probable that brain ischemic lesions in the patient, accompanied by psychical disturbances, resulted from genetically based susceptibility of the vascular wall to injury.
