Abstract
Introduction: A case of sternum and rib-osteomyelitis caused by Salmonella enteritidis is presented, which is an uncommon disease. This location is usually associated with sickle cell anaemia, in our case
osteomyelitis was caused by hematogenous spread of food poisoning by Salmonella enteritidis.
Case report: The patient was treated with citostatics because of hairy leukaemia one month before the
onset of osteomyelitis. Firstly, he was treated surgically and with 4 different antibiotics in the
surgical outpatients’department. After three months the patient was referred to the Clinic of Infectious Diseases, where he obtained Ceftriaxone and Ciprofloxacin respectively. Cultures
were reported to be negative after the treatment. The sinus was completely cured.
Conclusions: The treatment of salmonella osteomyelitis is difficult and prolonged. Considering leukaemia,
the healing of the osteomyelitis was very important to prevent bacteriemia and sepsis in case
of debilitation of the immune system.
