Dural sinus thrombosis in essential thrombocythemia

Abstract
Background: Cerebral venous thrombosis due to hematologic causes accounts for 10–15% of cases. Thrombo hemorrhagic complications are common in patients with essential thrombocythemia (ET), however dural sinus thrombosis is a rare presentation of ET.
Case report: A 26-year-old lady presented with headache and seizures. Investigations showed features of thrombosis of straight sinus, superior sagittal sinus and right transverse sinuses. Hemogram showed marked thrombocytosis, which was confirmed to be due to ET. Investigations for other thrombophilic conditions were negative. She made a complete recovery and is doing well during the last 28 months of follow up.
Conclusions: In this report, a case of essential thrombocythemia presenting with dural sinus thrombosis is presented, which is very rare. All patients presenting with dural sinus thrombosis should undergo detailed thrombophilia work up. In patients with established ET, a search for congenital or acquired prothrombotic states should also be undertaken as presence of other thrombophilic states increases the risk of thrombosis among these patients.
