Abstract

The unique perioperative considerations in anesthetizing surgical-oncological patients have not received much attention, nor has the nature of the roles of the specialists who make up the team that accommodates their special
needs been precisely defined. The pathophysiological conditions of these patients are characterized by organ(s) malfunction, partly iatrogenically-induced, for which the skill that is requested from the team that handles
these cases is high. This regards the preparation of the patients both physically and mentally, the evaluation of extensive information and its impact on the surgical decision-making, the possible large number of specialists
whose opinion is requested at any stage of the treatment as well as the quality of the dedicated team that will follow the patient form the time he/she wakes up postoperatively through rehabilitation process to the moment
in which the patient is informed, several years later, that he is cured, or, less fortunately, that an additional operation is required to remove a recurrence. Undoubtedly, an essential factor that would ease the decision-makers
communicate with the patient and the family is proper and satisfactory pain control. This would allow peace of mind to the patient and careful judgment in his/her regards. This paper addresses these issues, mainly form the authors’ prospective and presents brief guidelines for optimal pain management for patients undergoing surgery for malignant conditions.
