Abstract
Background: Stroke is one of the most common cerebrovascular disorder worldwide leading to serious medical and socio-economic implications. The best strategy for reducing the burden of stroke is identification of risk factors and early intervention. This study was done to evaluate lipoprotein
(a) as an independent risk factor of acute ischemic stroke.
Case Report: The study was conducted in 123 subjects which included 66 patients of Computerized Tomography (CT) confirmed acute ischemic stroke and 57 age and sex matched healthy controls. Serum lipoprotein (a) levels were determined in the fasting venous blood samples by immunoturbidimetric assay. Complete hematological and biochemical parameters including
lipid profile were studied by available standardized methods in all subjects.
Raised lipoprotein (a) was found in 74.2% cases and 22.8% control subjects. Serum lipoprotein (a) levels were found to be 57.33 ± 4.40 mg/dl in the stroke patients whereas in the control group the levels were 22.45 ± 1.47 mg/dl (p
