Abstract

Background: Carcinomas of the small intestine are relatively rare and have a poor prognosis. Here, we report a case with a good prognosis.
Case Report: An 83-year-old man whose stool examination was positive for occult blood visited our hospital. Since exam results suggested a malignant small intestinal tumor, a partial resection of the small intestine with a lymphadenectomy was performed. The tumor was diagnosed as a
carcinoma of the small intestine. After two months, we found multiple liver metastases, and the patient received combination hepatic arterial infusion therapy with cisplatin (CDDP) and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU). After treatment, the metastases disappeared. A computed tomography (CT) scan at 9 months revealed a tumor in the abdominal cavity. It was resected and diagnosed as a recurrence of the small intestinal carcinoma. Subsequently, the patient
received chemotherapy with tegafur gimeracil oteraoil potassium (TS-1) 120 mg. Two years and five months after the primary operation, he is doing well and there are no evidence of recurrences and metastasis.
Conclusions: We think that it is important that active therapy be planned for cases of carcinoma of the small intestine.

Keywords: carcinoma of the small intestine, multidisciplinary treatment, liver metastasis
