Abstract

Background: An important feature of congenital glaucoma is the plasticity of the outer coat in infant eyes. This leads to stretching with increase in intraocular pressure and if the child is under 3 years of age it leads to enlargement of the globe which is known as buphthalmos. The aim of this study is to demonstrate the usefulness of Microtrephination glaucoma surgery in treating Buphthalmus.
Case Report: A case of a 3-month-old child with bilateral buphthalmus who had bilateral micro trephination glaucoma surgery at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Benin City, is presented. The child had cardiac abnormalities, which caused concern for the anaesthetists. Bilateral microtrephination lasted only 12 minutes thus reducing the risk of the anaesthetic procedure. The cloudiness in the right eye cleared within 3 weeks while it persisted in the left eye. Assessment of the intraocular pressures showed that both eyes were soft, and that the procedure was successful.
Conclusions: Microtrephination glaucoma surgery is effective, simple, and requires shorter time of exposure to anaesthesia in the management of buphthalmos.
