Abstract
Abstract
Background: We present a case report of retinitis pigmentosa diagnosed in a young woman with complex additional clinical abnormalities. According to the literature, all of them might coexist with retinitis pigmentosa, although coincidence is very rare.
Case Report: A young woman was admitted to the Department of Ophthalmology, Medical University of Lublin in 2010 with acute severe visual loss in her left eye. Ophthalmic examination revealed: BCVA of the right eye 0.5, drusen of optic disc, and peripheral retinal vascular anomalies. Visual acuity of her left eye was hand movement, due to vitreous hemorrhage. Additional examinations were performed, including perimetry and electroretinography, confirming clinical diagnosis of retinitis pigmentosa. Due to the hemorrhage in the vitreous in the left eye, pars plana vitrectomy was performed. During this surgical procedure peripheral retinal vascular anomalies were noticed with lipid exudatives and serous local retinal detachment.
Conclusions: Correct clinical diagnosis cannot be based only on the main clinical signs (vitreous hemorrhage in our case), but must include the full diagnostic procedure, allowing selection of an appropriate treatment.
