Abstract
Background: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a multi-systemic disease of autoimmune nature. Diabetes
mellitus (DM) is commonly seen in SLE patients particularly secondary to corticosteroid therapy.
Case Report: We report a case of a 33-year-old black female patient who developed SLE and severe insulin
resistant diabetes mellitus. She also had other features of the type B syndrome of insulin resistance
as skin hyperpigmentation, age of onset of the diabetes, race and sex.
Conclusions: The present report is the first case of SLE with such complication described in Brazil. A literature review on this subject is shown.
